When I was flying from Tampa to Portland a few years back, I considered that, being 35,000 feet above all the “noise” of living below, I should be able to create some new idea.
That’s when it hit me: BANG! WordPlay T-shirts!
The basic concept is simply to take English phrases and illustrate them; make them funny and uplifting, so people could have a moment or two of joy and fun. Fun, after all, is my personal go-button.
An image came to me right away:
Others followed. I wrote the concepts down as best I could… they were coming at me rapidly.
My trouble was that I do not know how to illustrate. In other words, I would have to find someone who could draw out, literally, what was either only on paper or in my head.
A friend from Australia helped with 8-9 designs, but they were too rudimentary for mass scale, although they offered a way for me to make prototypes and do surveys among my intended publics. People laughed and pointed at me to their friends. Solid result. The idea was going to fly!
Later, I saw the ilustrations of an up-and-coming musician, songwriter and filmmaker, Neal Fox. We collaborated on a few more designs before his other careers started to take off, but not before we established our venture online as WordPlay T-Shirts & Designs.
Now people can see what we produced together. We offer many colors, styles, and sizes of shirts, as well as hoodies and sweats. Also, our designs are available on coffee mugs and canvasses suitable for framing.
